After five intense days of competition at Ríos EQ (Murcia), the 2026 Spanish Dressage Championships came to a close on 7 June in the Senior, Under-25, Masters and Paralympic Dressage categories. Despite the high temperatures, the championships went ahead thanks to excellent organisation and arenas that allowed for a high standard of competition to be displayed throughout the week.
In the Senior and U25 team categories, gold went to the FAH A team, from the Andalusian Equestrian Federation, captained by Joaquín Salmerón and comprising José Antonio García Mena riding Gladiador do Lis, Francisco Benítez Sánchez riding Lord Platinum, Alejandro Sánchez del Barco riding Onuba TR and Juan de Dios Ramírez García riding Charro Azores. Silver went to FHdM Cibeles and bronze to FCH La Pedrera.
In the Senior category, Claudio Castilla and Jota das Figueiras were crowned Spanish champions in the technical medal event (Special Grand Prix). The silver went to José Antonio García Mena riding Gladiador do Lis, and the bronze to Borja Carrascosa riding Frizzantino FRH.
The Grand Prix Freestyle was one of the most thrilling moments of the championship. Borja Carrascosa and Frizzantino FRH took gold after a performance of the highest calibre, whilst José Antonio García Mena secured silver with Gladiador do Lis following a deeply moving performance that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The bronze went to Claudio Castilla and Jota das Figueiras.
In the U25 category, Natalia Bacariza and Valerius Ymas dominated both the technical test and the Kür, being crowned Spanish champions in both events. Teresa de la Puerta, making her debut and final appearance in the U25 category alongside Anum Concesur, put in a brilliant performance, winning two silver medals. The bronze, in both the Grand Prix and the Kür, went to Pablo García Cobos riding Let It Go T.
The Spanish Paralympic Dressage Championships also featured some outstanding performances. In the team event, gold went to Binomios Sin Límites, comprising Carla Onrubia riding Valerio, Félix Gómez riding Merlín and Kristi Zallo riding Zipi de Susaeta. Silver went to Team BIC and bronze to Odyssey.
As for the individual Paralympic Dressage titles, the Spanish champions were María del Carmen López García with Bribón de Ymas, Félix Gómez with Merlín and Alejandro José Espejo Lanzas with Operario VI in Grades II, III and VIa; Carla Onrubia on Valerio, Iker Beitia on Belizzio and Blanca Granados on Fábula del Ramillete in Grades IV and VIb; and Marta Rosas Gil-Vernet on Barbako and Alejandro Nande Iglesias on Brujo Car in Grade V.
Another of the championship’s standout performers was José Antonio García Mena in the National Critérium. The rider from Cádiz dominated alongside the young Van Gogh, aged just eight, winning every event in the championship and taking the gold. Natalia Bacariza on Romántico Ymas took the silver and Borja Carrascosa on FS Bloomberg completed the podium.
In the Copa Clásica, Sergio Morón and Fiona took the win, followed by Carla Biete on Vectrom and Mireia Corona on Fuer Trajano.
The National Team Masters once again showcased the excellent work being done at the grassroots level of the national sport. In the ponies category, victory went to Curro Ramírez on Koningshoek Florian, followed by Ònia Maldonado on Dinky Toy Van Het Bloemenhof and Alfonso Roig on Strandgaards Doleys.
In the 5-year-old category, José Alejandro Alcaide Roda and Vizconde de Gold were crowned winners, with Cristian Tudela and Red Spirit in second place and Júlia Álvarez and Francesca Bridgerton rounding off the podium after a very consistent championship.
In the 6-year-old category, the gold went to Roberto Carlos Cruz Rodríguez with Vivamos, the silver to Albert Rigo Caldentey with Saraswati and the bronze to Borja Agulló with Denton.
David de Castro and Theresa-DN took the honours in the 7-year-old category, followed by Bernat Barrachina with Elvis and Adrián Roldán with Auténtico de Narváez.
In the Children’s category, Sofía Barroso and Frido SN were crowned champions, with Victoria Roig and Scerlett in second place and María Iznairova with Orus in third.
The Junior category saw Daniela Cruz crowned champion with Valentina, whilst Hugo Mélida with Bohemian took silver and Francho Benedí with Degas de Ymas secured the bronze.
Finally, in the Young Riders category, Álvaro Cadena and FRA Diavolo took gold, ahead of Nile Urrutia on Viriathus Van GC and Alfonso Ruiz on De Yakare.
Murcia thus brought to a close an intense Spanish Championship, with a great atmosphere in the stands and a high standard of competition.
